Hawthorn House, a flagship project for Flux, exemplifies the convergence of brutalist architecture and poetic design. Conceived by Edition Office, the residence is defined by two grand concrete pavilions that seem to hover within a delicate landscape. The ambitious Hawthorn House project was a passion endeavour for Joe Grasso and the design and construct team at Flux, brought to life with the expertise of Figurehead Group’s most trusted contractors. From the intricately formed off-form concrete to the seamless integration of structure and landscape, every detail was executed with precision and care. This collaboration ensured that the architectural vision of Edition Office was not only realised but elevated, delivering a residence that stands as both a bold architectural statement and a deeply considered sanctuary.
From the outset, the intent was to craft a structure that evolves over time, allowing nature to encroach and redefine its presence, fostering an ongoing dialogue between the built form and its natural surroundings.

The intricate process of forming the structure required an uncompromising approach to materiality, with the raw concrete surface capturing the imprint of rough-sawn timber formwork. Over time, this texture has deepened with weathering, further embedding the house into its natural context. Expansive glazed openings dissolve boundaries between interior and exterior, allowing the architecture to frame curated views of the surrounding canopy and extending the internal floor plate seamlessly into the landscape.

The interplay between architecture and landscape is central to the experience of Hawthorn House. The residence was designed to be immersed within a living garden, with a lush and untamed landscape by Eckersley Garden Architecture providing a counterpoint to the geometric rigour of the home. Over time, climbing greenery has softened the starkness of the concrete, creating a dynamic tension between structure and nature. Each framed aperture invites light, shadow, and foliage into the home, reinforcing the idea of a sanctuary where architecture and landscape coalesce.

At every level, Hawthorn House showcases Flux’s commitment to crafting highly detailed, architecturally ambitious residences. The precision of material junctions, integration of concealed services, and execution of large-scale structural elements demonstrate a mastery of construction that enables complex design ideas to be fully realised. Beyond its materiality, the house is an evolving work of art—one that will continue to transform as nature reclaims its place, ensuring that the dialogue between built and organic elements remains ever-changing and immersive.
