The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) in South Yarra is a state-of-the-art, multi-level educational facility designed and constructed by Figurehead. This innovative building features four levels of integrated learning spaces, including specialist laboratories, customised classrooms, breakout areas, and a 275-seat auditorium. A highlight of the project is its advanced ETFE inflatable roof system, which enhances thermal insulation, natural lighting, and overall sustainability. One of the key challenges in constructing CHES was the integration of Glulam timber (GLT) beams with precast concrete panels. Figurehead overcame this by re-sequencing the construction process, ensuring GLT beams, which are susceptible to moisture damage, were installed only after the building was watertight. By using double-height precast panels to minimise crane lifts and carefully coordinating installation timing, the team delivered a structurally sound and sustainable facility where GLT beams provide striking long spans and a distinctive architectural feature.

CHES also required two modernised PC2 laboratories, meeting stringent containment and ventilation standards for advanced research. Figurehead collaborated with independent laboratory specialists, ensuring seamless benchtops, compliant chemical storage units, and precision air filtration systems. These facilities were meticulously inspected and certified to ensure compliance, resulting in cutting-edge spaces equipped for high-level experimentation.

To achieve the project’s sustainability goals, Figurehead prioritised local procurement, sourcing Glulam timber from Victorian suppliers to reduce emissions and delays. Eco-friendly materials, such as Woodwool ceiling infills, were used to improve acoustics while remaining fully recyclable, and a rooftop solar PV system was installed to provide renewable energy. The successful integration of the ETFE roof system, sourced and installed with precision, capped off the project’s innovative approach, making CHES a benchmark in sustainable educational design and construction.
