Beginning his career as a Site Cadet to gain hands-on experience while completing a Bachelor of Property and Construction at Melbourne Uni, Joe’s ambition and talent saw him move rapidly up through the ranks to become a respected project coordinator, planner, contract administrator, project manager and contracts manager.
In a career that now spans more than two decades, Joe has worked for a number of prestigious and tier one firms including Qanstruct, Westfield Group, Mirvac Construction and Icon Construction, where he played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion into the tier one sector.
In 2007, as the GFC loomed and against the (probably quite sound) advice of many of his peers and mentors, Joe left a senior role at Icon to realise a longstanding dream, teaming up with a former colleague to launch Figurehead. Those early days saw Joe take on various hands-on roles - designer, accountant and project manager to name a few - all while working from the spare room of a family home!
In 2014 Joe took over as sole Director of Figurehead, allowing him to elevate and appoint a strong and diverse executive management team that continues to take the company from strength to strength. Today, Figurehead is a thriving and established firm with more than 60 employees and a solid reputation for excellence in the commercial, industrial and residential sectors.
When he's not leading the 'Figurehead Army' or playing Dad to his kids Olivia, and Tom, Joe enjoys tennis, golf and running to stay fit - with varying levels of success. He's a passionate Hawthorn supporter and loves to cook and travel with family and friends. He's also the proud owner of a red 1969 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe, which, according to his daughter, Olivia, is the fastest car in the world! It's the same model owned by Joe's beloved grandfather and mentor and is a treasured symbol of Grasso family heritage, which Joe looks forward to one day passing on to his children.
At work, as at home, Joe values authenticity, courage, humility, industry and respect, and relishes the opportunity to mentor new talent and help others achieve their goals. Joe has worked hard to establish a loyal, hardworking and respectful company culture, often crediting Figurehead's success to the exceptional strength and loyalty of its team.
Want to chat to Joe about how Figurehead can help bring your vision to life? You can contact Joe on (03) 8592 6310 or pop into our Cremorne office and say hello!

Scott is an enthusiastic Figurehead cadet currently working on the Oxford Apartments project, while completing a Master of Construction Management at The University of Melbourne. He has previous experience with a residential concreter in Geelong where he worked in roles both on-site and in the office.
A relative new comer, Scott is already appreciating the close knit team and obvious camaraderie at Figurehead, and along with a desire to consistently deliver his A-Game, he looks forward to developing new aptitudes and skills with such an experienced and lauded organisation.
As an ex-Physical Education teacher and Personal Trainer, fitness has always played an integral part in Scott’s life, who today balances work with playing football for Modewarre FNC in the Bellarine Football League and coaching the under 18’s Colts. He is also a keen snowboarder who loves music, travel and drinking good coffee with friends.
With 22 years’ experience working in the Food Distribution industry Frank is no stranger to tight schedules, hard work and heavy machinery, making him an ideal Plant and Equipment Manager. Frank has been an integral member of the Figurehead team since his start in 2013 and relishes the camaraderie, the opportunity to share his terrible dad jokes and working with his favourite son, our Managing Director, Joe.
When he’s not at work you’ll find him perfecting his homemade salami, savouring a bottle of great wine or honing his killer instinct on the bowling green.
With more than ten years’ experience working in finance and accounts for the transport, company branding and private health industries, Nikki moved to Melbourne in 2011 to expand her portfolio into the property sector. After working as Assistant Accountant at Redcape Property Fund, Nikki joined the finance team at multinational property group Lend Lease before taking on the role of Accounts Clerk at Figurehead.
Originally from New Zealand, Nikki is a passionate All Black’s supporter and can always be relied on for an enthusiastic match update! She loves to travel and has recently returned from a trip to Indonesia.
Loren is an experienced administrator and office all-rounder who is currently completing a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) at Swinburne University. Since joining Figurehead in 2014 Loren has provided extensive support on a number of major projects including assisting with the design and development of our website and compiling our Corporate Profile.
Aside from her marketing skills, Loren is known for her Nigella-esque baking prowess and loves to whip up delicious treats in the kitchen. A keen adventurer, she recently returned from a 3-month backpacking trip in Morocco and Europe, after previously backpacking around South America in 2014 and Europe for the first time in 2015.
Mary is bringing her unerring eye for detail and design to the Figurehead building Cadet programme, while concurrently undertaking a Master of Construction Management, following a Melbourne University Bachelor of Environments (Landscape Architecture).
For the last two years Mary has employed her landscape architectural design capabilities to work on a range of projects, including schools and residential apartment complexes through to large scale developments.
Having completed a stint in estimating and working on tenders, she is presently on-site on Toorak for Figurehead's luxury brand Flux, assisting with project coordination. Mary enjoys the variety of each of her roles at every stage of development and relishes learning from some of the best (and nicest!) in the business.
Along with spending her precious downtime involved with community volunteer organisations, it comes as no surprise that Mary enjoys creating her own thriving horticultural environment in the garden.
If it’s true that knowledge itself is power, then Figurehead Building Cadet, Robert, is a powerful man indeed. A fully qualified Cabinet Maker, with experience in Drafting and Design, Robert developed an appreciation for the impact sustainability practices have on the building industry, going on to enrol in a La Trobe University Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Geoscience. A natural marriage between the precepts of environmental science and building have led Robert to his currently enrolled University of Melbourne Master of Construction Management, Majoring in Project Management.
Working at Figurehead complements Robert’s studies with practical experience in key industry areas in an environment of professional excellence. Once his stint with the Estimating department is completed, Robert is looking forward to getting on-site to see exactly how the estimating work is realised in situ.
Robert quite literally marches to the beat of his own drum. From playing traditional Scottish music on the side drums at 13, his passion, having crossed multiple genres, led to a national band tour and Top 100 album. Today Robert has achieved his life-long musical goal of splicing Bay Area Thrash Metal with Scandinavian Melodic Music, with his new band’s debut album on the cusp of completion. Not sure we’ll be humming along in the office, but you never know!
Adrian is realising his aspiration of acquiring hands-on building industry experience with the A-Team at Figurehead. Rounding off his penultimate year at Victoria University, where he is currently completing a Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours), Adrian has resolutely enjoyed every aspect of the course and is relishing the opportunity to apply his practical skills after graduation.
Adrian feels very much at home at Figurehead, where he is currently holed up in the busy Estimating department under the expert tutelage of Anthony and Kim. Committed to learning as much as possible, he is enjoying estimating, but looks forward to garnering new experiences in other areas as well.
A keen footballer who has been playing since he was six, Adrian coaches the Under 9’s at Ascot Vale Football club where he reinforces his personal belief in the importance of team work to the next generation of players. Adrian enjoys travel and as part of his Honours degree, spent six weeks at South Bohemia University in the Czech Republic. He is keen to expand his knowledge of European architecture, culture and history, with further travel in the future.
Hard working Lydia is relishing being part of Figurehead’s multifaceted Building Cadet program, concurrently working in the industry as she completes her Bachelor of Property and Real Estate and Construction Management (Honours).
Half way through her double degree, Lydia is enjoying time in the busy Figurehead estimating department, where the opportunity to observe practical applications of her studies is invaluable.
At this point she is leaving her eventual career options wide open but given her interest in both Project Management and Contract Administration, Lydia is excited about getting out on-site to see just how things are done.
With family originally hailing from the UK, Lydia has been a frequent overseas visitor, with plans for a bucket list trip to New York and further travelling around the UK and Europe after that. Lydia’s a sporty type with downtime that involves netball, swimming and F45 fitness classes, enthusiastically supporting the AFL Hawks, and balanced by slightly less athletic cooking, eating, reading and spending time with the people she loves.
